Open services in the digital agenda

The notion of open data refers to rather complex technical and organizational aspects. Should this concept be extended to create open services, the result would be particularly important. In fact, an intelligent and standardized sharing of elementary data and functions could play as a driver to develop advanced services for citizens and companies. This change could also foster the current demand for broadband, which often seems still weak and immature.

This is the topic of Alfonso Fuggetta's article on Lavoce.info, February 27th 2012.

UrbanMatch Milano

UrbanMatch Milano
is a mobile game based on Semantic Web and Human Computation technologies.

This experimental application has been developed by CEFRIEL within a research project sponsored by the Corporate Research and Technologies unit of Siemens AG.

UrbanMatch was launched on iTunes on February, 1st 2012.  The game, available both in Italian and English, is free and can be installed on the iPhone, iPod touch and iPad. The application is available on iTunes for few months in order to test some innovative features, specifically to assess Semantic Web and Human Computation technologies and evaluate the attractiveness of this kind of gaming applications for a target audience represented by people moving in an urban context.

UrbanMatch is conceived as a "game with a purpose" application that is able to improve the information related to the city, enabling the selection of photos that best represent the coolest locations in Milan. This solution is an example of Human Computation technology, because, while playing, users are involved in the photo selection.
The purpose of the game is to couple different photos picturing the same subject (e.g. a building or a monument) that players can see around them. The game is meant to take place in a certain number of selected areas in Milan, which are visualized on a map, representing the coolest or most famous locations of the city.
The closer to a specific target players are, the more precise and reliable their recognition of its parts and details can be, so to gain higher scores across the various game levels.
UrbanMatch offers six difficulty levels and two game modes: in the "race against time" option, users are asked to find the highest number of couples in the least amount of time, whereas in the "wise choice" mode they have no time constraints but only 4 attempts to complete each level.
The application also gives users the opportunity to save their scores and share a leaderboard list with other players, thus fostering a “social” dimension of the game thanks to the competition among players.
CEFRIEL, in cooperation with Siemens AG, is also developing “UrbanMatch Munich”, adopting the same game concept for the city of Munich.

3+1 Challenges for the Future of Universities

Existing approaches to research and education are increasingly perceived as unable or at least insufficient to capture and take into account the complexity and the dynamism of the globalized society. Moreover, the financial crisis and the need to reduce public budgets are limiting the resources available for academic research and education.

In this InnoVision Paper, prof. Fuggetta proposes 3+1 challenges for the future of universities. The challenges deal with three fundamental functions of modern universities: research, innovation, and education. Moreover, a fourth challenge is primarily related to the attitude and behavior of faculty members and academic boards. The ultimate goal of the paper is to contribute to the development of effective and useful strategies to support the evolution and growth of universities, as key players to promote the public good and the overall progress of our society.
