CEFRIEL announces SmartFieldTM, a new platform previewed at Torino 2006, which will make it possible to obtain full and precise information on training and matches and, by means of 3D reconstruction, to select new angles to view a contest. |
New frontiers for sport
Applied research revolutionizes sport strategies and training. Watch a hockey game from the touchline and also as a virtual reality reconstruction on a computer; follow the movement of the forward or of the keeper only; zoom in on the puck in order to follow its course across the ice; at the same time, access real-time information and statistics to identify the players who are completely exhausted and needs to be replaced. These are only some of the scenarios that you can exploit using SmartFieldTM Hockey, the platform for real time digital analysis of training and sporting events. SmartFieldTM is suitable for many kinds of sport, such, for example, hockey, basket, baseball, and volleyball, but also skating, athletics, etc. In particular, at Torino 2006 the SmartFieldTM Hockey application is previewed.
How is all this possible?
RFID (Radio Frequency Identification) - UWB (Ultra Wide Band) is a radio system designed to identify and accurately locate persons and objects. RFID-UWB sensors (called tags) are roughly the size of a coin and can be fitted on athletes and objects that it is intended to monitor. The radio signals transmitted by these sensors are processed by special receivers (called readers) that can calculate the exact 3D position of the sensors (order of centimetres). SmartFieldTM Hockey platform is one of the results of the collaboration between CEFRIEL and Eximia, an Italian company who is a leader in RFID and RFID-UWB technologies. Both groups have been active in the area of UWB systems, focusing on applications related to localization, high-capacity communication systems and high-precision, low-cost radars (suitable, for example, for the automotive industry).
Through the eyes of an athlete
 |
CEFRIEL's laboratories are working in collaboration with Eximia to integrate SmartField Hockey with the powerful engines for 3D rendering that already fascinate the videogame enthusiasts. In this way, on a TV set, but also over the Internet or a mobile phone, it will be possible to view and get a re-run of a match, recreated with accuracy by means of 3D graphics in real time from a variety of angles: through the eyes of a centre-forward, a full back, a goalie, or a favourite player. |
High precision
 |
SmartField Hockey records all the athletes' movements with high precision: in this way, it is able to accurately inquire on training and matches. |
